Increasing consumption
Figure 1 shows that, a
ccording to the Federal Government’s
Australian Plastic Flows and
Fates Study 2020
–
21
, plastic consumption in Australia rose by 116% between 2000 and
2020-21. The study defines consumption as the total use of plastic by Australian industry
and consumers, including locally made as well as imported product.

In the year 2000,
Australia consumed 1.79 million tonnes of plastic. By 2020
–
21, this had risen to 3.79 million
tonnes, equivalent to the weight of 72 Sydney Harbour Bridges that year.
